Mosh party

This is my biggest project yet which explored abstraction and performance art by making a painting without paint, and using the body to make marks. This project titled mosh party, was an ode to metal and alternative communities, based on an essential part of self-expression, which is moshing. Moshing is a form of dance which is aggressive, fast, chaotic, and an overall release of energy to music which is at the core of these COMMUNITIES. These paintings physically captured the energy of moshing, where i gathered eight of my friends to mosh on unstretched canvas. For the ‘paint’ i used fake blood, modelo beer, rockstar energy drinks, hair dye, nail polish, fishnets, shoelaces, sewing thread, needles, fire, gesso, and CIGARETTES. I was extremely intentional about the materials i used to further develop the initial paintings, but originally i had my friends moshed on things that would usually be found on the floor after a concert full of moshing: potential blood, and spilt drinks that made the floors so sticky.

Along with these massive paintings, i created a documentary that captured the entire process. It was recorded on a handheld camcorder.
